A backhoe digs a test pit. A series of approximately 25 test pits were dug around the edges of the Landfill. These pits were used to make sure of the location of the waste. As the design continues, this information will be used to ensure the cap is the right size to cover all the waste. 6/2/98

Edge of Bush Valley Landfill #2

Drillers begin the process of monitoring well abandonment. Well abandonment is the sealing up of monitoring wells once they are no longer needed. This is done so that potentially contaminated groundwater cannot use the well as a pathway to move from one aquifer to another. In this case, well abandonment was done by perforating the casing of the well with a device driven down the length of the well casing by a drill rig. Close-up of the perforated well casing showing the tremmie pipe used to carry grout down to the base of the well. Grout will fill the well casing and flow out the perforations, sealing the outside of the casing preventing flow along the outside wall of the casing.
