Drake Cleanup Team Interrupted Treatment of Site Soils to Work on Soil Handling Equipment

LOCK HAVEN, PA; March 20, 1998 -- On March 19, feed of contaminated soil into the incinerator at the Drake Chemical Superfund Site was halted at 9:08 p.m. Feed suspension lasted for seven hours while maintenance was performed on the soil feed screw system. The kiln, secondary combustion chamber and air pollution control systems were maintained in normal operation. This event did not cause the thermal relief vent to open, and at no time was there a release of untreated emissions. Maintenance on the system was completed at 4:04 a.m., and the cleanup continued to proceed under normal conditions.
