Drake Team Cools Down Incinerator to Perform Repairs

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.; April 11, 1998 -- The Drake Cleanup Team, late yesterday, began shutting off burners and cooling down the plant to make additional repairs to refractory brick lining the incinerator kiln. During routine maintenance inspection, Friday afternoon, technicians observed loose brick within the kiln.

A similar discovery, on March 31, precipitated a week-long shutdown for repairs to a small section of brick. The extent of necessary repairs will not be known until the temperature cools down sufficiently for the kiln to be opened. Preliminary observations, however, suggest that a complete replacement to brick in the affected area may take about three weeks.

It is within the rotary kiln that contaminated soils, from this former chemical plant site, are heated to temperatures above 900 degrees. The extreme heat forces contaminants out of the soil and into a gaseous stream where they are destroyed in a secondary combustion chamber.
