Drake Pauses for Planned Maintenance

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.; October 6, 1998 - The Drake Cleanup Team suspended feed of hazardous soil at 11 p.m. last night, beginning a short period of planned maintenance and inspections. During this maintenance cycle, expected to take about three days, the plant will remain in a "hot hold" mode with burners continuing to operate throughout most of the period. Major work during this cycle will include replacement of worn feed screws. The new screws are fitted with hardened cutting teeth, a feature that has proven to extend the usable life of the screws. Other maintenance includes replacement of worn parts in the clean soil handling system, replacement of worn components in the acid gas scrubber system and periodic inspections and calibrations. Earlier last night, the incinerator had an unplanned opening of the thermal relief vent (TRV). Feed of hazardous soil had been suspended for about 17 minutes after a scrubber water piping connection began leaking. For a planned TRV opening, feed is stopped for at least 30 minutes prior to opening the vent. Due to the scrubber water leak, technicians opened the vent to prevent more serious problems from occurring. The connection was repaired, and burners were relit to maintain a hot hold condition for the scheduled maintenance cycle. The team has safely and successfully cleaned more than 149,000 tons of contaminated soil from this former chemical plant site. The cleanup passed the halfway point during late September in preparing this site for reuse.
