LOCK HAVEN, Pa.; March 18, 1999 - The Drake Cleanup Team stopped the feed of soil, shut off kiln burners and began cooling down the incinerator, Tuesday evening, March 16, to enable crews to perform repairs on the system. The repairs are being undertaken on a bearing shaft that fractured after more than a year of operation A replacement shaft is being fabricated at a local machine shop and will be installed to replace the original. Repairs are expected to take five to six days, after which the incinerator will be reheated before treatment of hazardous soil resumes. The incinerator is cleaning approximately 200,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil that remained when the former chemical plant occupying the property closed in 1982. Cleanup is expected to be complete by early May 1999.
