Austin Avenue Radiation

Public Notice: July 1996

U. S. EPA ANNOUNCES PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD AND PUBLIC MEETING FOR AUSTIN AVENUE SUPERFUND SITE GROUND WATER REMEDY

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a Proposed Remedial Action Plan, today, which addresses contaminated ground water at the Austin Avenue Radiation Superfund Site in eastern Delaware County. A Record of Decision for the Site, signed by EPA in June 1994, deferred the cleanup decision for ground water contamination until further information could be collected. The Proposed Plan released today is based on results of a field investigation performed by EPA in March and April 1995. The area addressed by the Proposed Plan includes small portions of Upper Darby Township and Lansdowne Borough which lie on either side of Union Avenue in the vicinity of the former Cummings processing facility on Austin Avenue.

Water samples were collected from 16 temporary well points installed in this area during the field investigation. The samples were analyzed for Site-related radio nuclides, including uranium, radium 226, and thorium 230. None of the samples exceeded the maximum concentrations allowable in public water supplies under the standards established by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. In addition, there are no known ground water users in the area. Drinking water is supplied to area residents via public water lines from municipal water sources which are located miles from the site.

For these reasons, EPA is proposing that no further action be taken to address ground water at the Austin Avenue site.

EPA will hold a public comment period from July 7, 1996, through midnight August 6, 1996. During this time, written comments on the Proposed Plan may be submitted to:
