State Environmental Management System (EMS) Offices

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a management approach which enables an organization to identify, monitor and control the environmental aspects of its organization as part of its overall management system. An EMS may decrease operating and maintenance expenses and/or reduce or delay the need for capital outlays for infrastructure. Such cost savings may eliminate or reduce the need for utility rate increases and the need for financial assistance. The costs of developing an EMS may be included in State Revolving Fund assistance for publicly-owned wastewater facilities and for public drinking water facilities. EMS programs are generally developed in conjunction with pollution prevention and/or compliance assistance programs.
