Mid-Atlantic Water

The Virginia Department of Health administers a state-coordinated beach monitoring program at coastal and Chesapeake Bay bathing beaches. Water sampling is carried out by Department of Health employees who work in the local health departments. Sampling takes place from mid-May through September. Water is sampled for enterococci (microorganisms associated with fecal matter). Swimming advisories are posted when a single sample exceeds 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water.
