In November 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and PADEP’s consultants conducted a site visit. The visit consisted of a site tour, and information gathering to assess the current status of the facility.
EPA determined that the Environmental Indicator (EI) for Current Human Exposures is currently under control. Pursuant to the agreement with the PADEP, the National Forge Co. completed the two-year study that evaluates the onsite groundwater plume under static conditions. The objective of the study is to determine if the pump and treat system is still required to control groundwater plume migration. The results of study conclude that the groundwater plume is stagnant and will not migrate offsite. As a result, the EPA determined that EI for Migration of Contaminated Groundwater is also under control. National Forge Co. will continue to operate in compliance to EPA/PADEP RCRA regulations.
The National Forge Company (NFC) was founded by Clinton Wilder in 1915 and was later moved to the Irvine, Pennsylvania plant site in 1916. The Wilder family maintained ownership for nearly 80 years until Robert O. Wilder sold the company name and assets to National Forge employees in 1995. The NFC facility encompasses 323 acres in which 46 acres are developed for industrial purposes. The facility is an integrated forge shop that integrates several processes that include melting, forging, heat treating, and machining of steel for the heavy capital goods industry. Some of the products that NFC produces include pipe molds, gun barrels, shafting, rotors, rolls, and crankshafts.
