Status
- The GE Transportation Systems (GE) facility received a Final Decision of No Further Action (NFA) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on September 24, 2009. The decision to issue an NFA at the Facility was based on a review of EPA and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection files regarding the environmental history of the Facility presented in an Environmental Indicator Inspection Report, dated December 2003 and the follow-up Sediment Sampling and Well Abandonment Report dated July 13, 2009. EPA concluded that there are no current or unaddressed releases of hazardous constituents from the Facility and no further corrective action or controls are necessary at this time. All pertinent information is available in the Administrative Record filed at the EPA Region III office.
- Environmental Indicators (EIs) were completed on August 9, 2009. The two EIs are "Current Human Exposures Under Control" and "Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control." The EIs completed reflect the decision of No Further Action and have status codes of "Yes, Under Control" for both.
Background
- The GE site is an active diesel locomotive engine manufacturing facility in Grove City, Mercer County, Pennsylvania located at 1503 West Main Street Extension. The facility is approximately one-mile northwest of the center of Grove City. The site occupies an approximately 50-acre area. The plant building covers approximately 10 acres and consists of the 2.5-acre original building in the north and the 7.5-acre addition built in 1983. The site is bordered by Bessemer and Lake Erie railroad tracks to the north, the George Junior Republic School for Boys to the west, and residential areas and commercial land to the south and east.
- General Electric has owned the site since 1970. Initially, the site was used only for the assembly of engines from component parts. In 1983, the facility expanded its operations to include the manufacture of diesel engine parts. General Electric purchased the property in 1970 from a re-development authority. The ownership history before 1970 is not known.
