Status
An Environmental Indicator (EI) inspection was conducted at the Conversion Systems facility (Facility) in August 2007. All areas where hazardous waste was handled appeared well-maintained; no evidence of spills or releases were apparent.
The EPA has determined that the Facility met the current human exposures under control indicator on December 27, 2011. The EPA has determined that the Facility met the migration of contaminated groundwater under control indicator on December 27, 2011. In January 2012, EPA issued a Final Decision of Corrective Action Complete without Controls for the Facility.
Background
The Facility is located at 500 Stenton Avenue in Plymouth Meeting, Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The Facility is bordered by a quarry, the Highway Materials Inc. facility. The Facility covers approximately 2.5 acres.
Conversion Systems occupied/rented the Site building for a period of two years, from March 22, 1982, until March 3, 1984. The facility was utilized for storage of hazardous waste materials in support of Conversion’s Horsham, Pennsylvania treatment facility (PAD 064362940). Currently, both facilities have been closed.
Wastes stored at Conversion included paint waste, industrial sludges, and wastes from steel manufacturing. The wastes were received from the Conversion Horsham facility and were stored in drums. The Horsham facility performed hazardous waste research to determine potential uses and disposal methods for the hazardous waste.
A closure plan was submitted on January 11, 1984, to PADER. PADER approved their closure plan on August 15, 1984, and their hazardous waste Part B application was returned on August 30, 1984.
A letter from USEPA Contractor NUS to USEPA, dated September 27, 1990, recommended that no further action be taken at the Site under CERCLA.
No spills have been reported at this site, and there appear to be no negative environmental impacts from Conversion’s operations.
The site was visited by EPA on August 23, 2007. The record review and site visit are documented in the Final Environmental Indicator Inspection Report which is contained in the AR and available upon request
