EPA is currently reviewing the Environmental Indicators (EIs) Inspections Report for the Koppers facility (Facility) located in Verona, Pennsylvania. Specifically, the two EIs are “Current Human Exposures Under Control” and “Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control.” In general terms, these measures indicate current “environmental conditions”: whether people are currently being exposed to environmental contamination at unacceptable levels, and whether any existing plumes of contaminated groundwater are getting larger or adversely affecting surface water bodies. EPA will issue the determinations for the two EIs by the end of 2014. Contingent of the EI determinations additional investigation may or may not be required.
Koppers primarily used the facility for research and development in tar, wood-treating chemicals, adhesives, coal, coke, roofing products, pitches, protective coatings, and other coal-derived products. T he facility consists of laboratories, pilot plants, administrative buildings, and support structures situated on approximately 9.7 acres. The majority of the facility was constructed during the early 1950s with acquisitions of property and additional acquisitions in the early 1970s. The property is triangular in shape, bordered on the northwest and northeast sides by Plum Creek, and on the south by Plum Street.
