Current Progress at the Site

This facility is one of EPA Region III's high priority RCRA corrective action sites. The approximately ten acre inactive landfill was used to landfill coal-tar byproduct and activated wastewater treatment sludge from Kopper's nearby Follansbee, West Virginia plant. On March 22, 2000 EPA determined that both the Human Exposures and Groundwater Environmental Indicators have been met. EPA and WVDEP evaluated the site and determined that all of the corrective action requirements have been met. In November of 2005, WVDEP reissued Colliers a Post Closure Permit that included a No Further Corrective Action with Monitoring determination as part of the permit. The facility is still required to perform semi-annual groundwater compliance monitoring. Activities at this site are now covered under the West Virginia State permit.

RCRA Corrective Action activities at this facility have been conducted under the direction of EPA Region 3 with assistance from the State. A new WVDEP RCRA permit was issued that provides lead authority for Corrective Action to the State.
