Waste = Lost Profit!
The Waste Minimization Program Can Help Reduce or Eliminate Waste at Your Facility.
The waste minimization/pollution prevention assessment of your facility is accomplished through a facility Site Visit from the Waste Minimization Program.
What is a waste minimization Site Visit?
An opportunity to:
- Reduce costs through better management of materials, water, and energy
- Improve product quality
- Improve operating efficiency
- Achieve competitive advantage
- Change your hazardous waste generator status
The waste minimization Site Visit is a FREE service of the Waste Minimization Program to generators of hazardous waste within Region 3. A generator initiates the Site Visit process by making a request to a Waste Minimization Program member, or to another staff of the State or EPA office (e.g., inspectors, permit writers). The Waste Minimization team member will contact the generator to obtain background information and to schedule a date for the Site Visit. On the day of the Site Visit, the Waste Minimization team members will follow the procedure described below.
Waste Minimization Site Visit Procedure
1. Complete plant tour
- Pre-plant tour meeting
- Plant/process tour (e.g. observe plant operations, housekeeping, equipment condition/maintenance, interview operators)
- Exit meeting (discuss observations and further action, assessment report, recognition program)
2. Evaluate data from Site Visit, conduct further research, generate report
- Identify potential Waste Minimization opportunities
- Contact facility for additional information to clarify opportunities for waste minimization (cost information, if available)

Report Outline) [Adobe Acrobat PDF file]
Note: The Waste Minimization Site Visit Report contains recommendations based on information and observations from the Site Visit, and is submitted to the facility. The facility is under no obligation to implement any of the suggestions contained in the Report. Each suggestion will require analysis by the facility in regard to customer requirements, technological applicability to your manufacturing process, and any applicable regulatory requirements.
3. Follow-up
- Contact facility one week after report is submitted to schedule a date to brief top management on report recommendations
- Mail follow-up questionnaire six months after completion of the Site Visit
