Non-point source pollution is a significant environmental problem. Agricultural runoff of surplus nutrients degrades our nation's waters. The most profound example is the hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico, which is induced by Mississippi River discharge. Therefore, Sand County Foundation has undertaken a long-term commitment to develop and evaluate a model for reducing non-point source pollution through the use of performance and market-based incentives. The Foundation has established a consortium of stakeholders, beginning with farmers and scientists for a pilot project in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin to demonstrate the use of incentives to reduce non-point source nitrogen discharge from agricultural lands.
