Technical Assistance
Region 5 Waste Minimization
In 1990, EPA Region 5 decided to promote source reduction and recycling by establishing a non-regulatory, waste minimization technical assistance program (WMTAP). This programs focus is to help hazardous and solid waste generators to reduce environmental health risks by eliminating and reducing hazardous waste generation and releases. Regional waste minimization staff work with facilities in various ways to add value to their efforts to achieve hazardous and solid waste reductions. Services range from providing waste minimization information and training to conducting detailed Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessments.
Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessments
WMTAP staff specialize in technology transfer and implementation, as well as helping facilities eliminate the barriers to waste minimization. We can provide guidance on how to get management support, how to get employees trained and involved, and how to develop a facility program that produces waste reduction results! Upon requesting WMTAPs Assessment services, EPA staff will:
- Screen facilities to determine eligibility
- Contact facility staff to coordinate an opportunity assessment
- Help the facility prioritize processes that will be focused on during the assessment
- Work with facility staff to collect needed information
- Conduct an on-site visit
- Develop waste minimization opportunities for implementation
- Provide relevant resources and information
- Conduct follow-up to determine success of implementation
- Help facility publicize
success

Waste Minimization Case Studies
The Waste Minimization Technical Assistance Program encourages facilities to engage in waste minimization. One of the ways WMTAP does this is by demonstrating that waste minimization has worked at other facilities. The following case studies illustrate the benefits that can be achieved through waste minimization efforts. Additionally, the waste minimization opportunities identified in these and other case studies may be transferable to other facilities facing similar challenges.
