EPA GIS Data
The EPA uses a wide variety of data to support environmental analysis and decision making. In Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands), GIS staff have work closely with other organizations at the local, state and federal levels to share or jointly develop critical data sets for environmental analysis. GIS data sets maintained by EPA for Region 2 are provided for download below as a public information resource for the public. Each Region 2 data download includes descriptive information, or metadata, about the data source that is compliant with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata content standards
, and any additional available background material related to the data.
Most of the data used for GIS analysis in EPA Region 2 originates from other organizations. See "GIS Resources and Links" to access data and applications from many of these organizations. For any additional information about EPA Region 2 GIS data, please email r2gisdata@epa.gov.
EPA Regulated Facility Data for EPA Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for environmental oversight over a variety of industrial activities under many federal statutes including the Clean Air Act (CAA), the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Clean Water Act (CWA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). EPA facility data can be downloaded from the national EPA geospatial data download page. From that site you can download a number of facility data types in multiple file formats, including a Google Earth KMZ file for all of EPA Region 2. (KMZ files can be viewed in the free downloadable version of Google Earth
.)
EPA Regulated facility data can also be queried and displayed through a variety of other EPA web resources, including:
- EnviroMapper and MyEnvironment: Web-based mapping applications to access EPA data.

Sole Source Aquifers in New York and New Jersey
This layer is the designated sole source aquifers of New York and New Jersey. A Sole Source Aquifer, is an aquifer that supplies 50% or more of the drinking water for a given area where there are no reasonably available alternative sources should the aquifer become contaminated. The purpose of designation of SSA is to protect an area's ground water resource by requiring U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) review of any proposed projects within the designated area that are receiving federal financial assistance. All proposed projects receiving federal funds are subject to review to ensure they do not endanger the water source. The Region 2 Sole Source Aquifers are digitized from the paper copies of the SSA's with a boundary of USGS 7.5 Minute quadrangle maps.
The sole source aquifer data are all included in one ZIP archive file for download. Data are provided in both ESRI shapefile (shp) and Google KML format. For details on the individual data layers, please consult the individual documentation (metadata) that is included for each layer in text and XML format. Shapefiles can be read in most GIS software as well as in the free ArcExplorer reader
. KML files can be viewed in the free downloadable version of Google Earth
