Energy
- Keep doors and windows closed to keep heat or air conditioning from escaping.
- Paint walls and ceiling a light color.
- Limit access to public area thermostats.
- Install occupancy/infrared sensors to control lights and temperature.
- Weatherize your facility by properly insulating walls and sealing doors and windows
- Purchase ENERGY STAR qualified products including:
- Office equipment
- Electronics
- Exit signs
- Appliances and vending machines
- Lighting systems
- Food service equipment
- HVAC systems
- Assess your facility’s current and past energy use to identify opportunities to improve energy performance.
Waste
- Develop a program to facilitate donation or sale of extraneous supplies, furniture, and electronics.
- Purchase products with the least amount of packing.
- Ask vendors to use reusable packaging containers and pallets and take them back. Write into contracts where possible.
- Purchase signage with post-consumer recycled content.
- Implement a facilitywide recycling program for municipal solid waste and hazardous waste, including electronics.
- Purchase environmentally preferable electronics, such as an ENERGY STAR or EPEAT registered products..
- Reuse and/or recycle building materials during renovations.
- Purchase recyclable and recycled-content building materials.
Water
- Purchase water-efficient fixtures, such as toilets, faucets, and showerheads.
Air Quality
- Do not allow vehicle idling at front entrance or loading dock.
- Use low volatile organic compound (VOC) emission paints.
- Maintain 100 percent smoke-free facility.
- Green fleets to minimize harmful emissions and reduce fuel use
Pest Management
- Control clutter, foodstuff, and building penetrations to minimize pests.
- Use sticky boards and pheromone traps.
- Spot treat only where pests are located.
- Install fly lights near entrances to shipping, receiving, food preparation and waste disposal areas to trap the pests.
- Use baits and traps rather than pesticide sprays.
- Use biologically-based pesticides.
- Implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program:
- Set an action threshold level.
- Monitor pests to determine what needs control.
- Prevent pests.
- Control with less risky pest control methods.
Toxic Reduction
- Use low volatile organic compound (VOC) emission paints.
- Use environmentally preferable cleaning products.
- Purchase environmentally preferable products, such as furniture and carpet, with lower levels of glue, formaldehyde, and volatiles.
