EPA Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEPS) - are environmentally beneficial projects which violators voluntarily agree to perform as part of a settlement of an enforcement action. In return, EPA agrees to reduce the monetary penalty that would otherwise apply as a result of the violations. Selection and evaluation of proposed SEPs will be conducted in accordance with the hierarchy of environmental management set forth under the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 i.e. SEPs involving pollution prevention techniques are preferred over other types of reduction or control strategies. A copy of EPA's SEP policy as well as examples of SEPs previously included in EPA enforcement actions can be found on EPA's SEP Homepage.
