Self-Assessment for the Metal Finishing Industry
- (2001. free) The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's
Pollution Prevention Unit develop this quick and easy checklist for
determining environmental compliance and pollution prevention opportunities
for metal finishers
Non-Cyanide Plating Processes (1994) - This fact sheet developed by the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) summarizes some viable alternatives to cyanide-based copper, zinc, and cadmium plating processes . It contains an alternatives matrix that provides comparative information on each alternative, including corrosion protection, finish appearance, color, ductility, plating uniformity, and other process considerations. To obtain copy of the fact sheet, call TURI at (508) 934-3275.
P2IRIS
- This is an interactive database developed by the Institute of Advanced
Manufacturing Sciences (IAMS) to provide process improvement and waste
reduction information. The database is organized by industry sector.
The current industry sectors covered by P2IRIS are electroplating,
printing, and metal painting.
Pollution Prevention in the Primary Metals Industry: A Manual
for Technical Assistance Providers (1998. $10) - This manual provides
information for assistance providers on primary metals manufacturing
and P2 options and alternatives. To order call 617-367-8558 or email
neppr@tiac.net
Slideshow: RCRA Compliance for Metal Finishing Facilities
(1998) - This 20 minute slide show provides an overview of RCRA compliance
and P2 for the metal finishing industry. To purchase or rent call
617-367-8558 or email neppr@tiac.net
Self-Audit and Inspection Guide for Facilities Conducting Cleaning, Preparation, and Organic Coating of Metal Parts (1998) - This audio-visual tool on CD-ROM and accompanying written guidance will lead users through a virtual facility which conducts organic finishing (painting) of metal parts using video and animation. The guide will identify conventional process steps, associated equipment, potential point source releases or waste generation activities, federal regulatory requirements, common causes of violation, and pollution prevention opportunities. The purpose of the guide is to assist inspectors and facility personnel in identifying activities and requirements necessary to complete a full environmental audit of production processes, equipment, and management systems. To order call Scott Throwe at 202-564-7013 or via email at throwe.scott@epa.gov.
National Metal Finishing Resource
Center
which assists metal finishers to identify the specific federal environmental
regulations that apply to them, improve their compliance and environmental
regulations and learn about pollution prevention approaches and environmental
improvements that will save them money and resources.
Pollution Prevention in Paints and Coatings Processes, A Manual
for Technical Assistance Providers (1998. $30.00) This manual
was developed by the Northeast Waste Management Official's Association
to provide detailed information for technical assistance providers
on the metal coatings process and P2 options and alternatives. To
order call, 617-367-8558 or email neppr@tiac.net.
Pollution Prevention in Metal Finishing:
A Manual for Technical Assistance Providers (1997. $30.00) This
manual was developed by the Northeast Waste Management Official's
Association to provide detailed information for technical assistance
providers on metal finishing and P2 options and alternatives. To order
