Regulatory Success Story
How a facility benefited from its membership in Performance Track.
"ETHICON, in Somerville NJ, was required to file a Title V permit application with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) because we triggered the EPA's MACT requirements for ethylene oxide. A permit application was submitted in 1999. While our application was under review, a portion of our ethylene oxide sterilization activity was discontinued. Since we were no longer a major facility, nor triggering the EPA MACT standard, we sought to withdraw our Title V permit application with NJDEP. Performance Track Leadership in EPA Region 2 was instrumental in assisting us with obtaining the appropriate regulatory approvals from EPA so we could work with NJDEP and successfully withdraw our permit application. Because of our participation and relationships within the Performance Track program, we were able to avoid what would have been an unnecessary regulatory burden for the size and scope of the operations at our plant."
