Baxter Healthcare Corporation of Puerto Rico, Jayuya Facility:
Water Use Reduction Challenge
Reducing water use is a national priority for the Performance Track program and as such, it is a regional challenge opportunity. Performance Track members doing a water use reduction challenge goal must endeavor to decrease the amount of water used by the facility by 15% of the baseline conditions.
The Baxter Jayuya Facility has been a member of Performance Track since 2003 and has been in operation for over 40 years producing intravenous solutions for medical applications. As water is an important component of these solutions, water conservation is of a very high priority for the site. In addition, water is a precious and costly resource in Puerto Rico. To fulfill the facility’s Performance Track water use goal, the Baxter Jayuya Facility used a business objective-based model to approach the task. They re-examined all the processes that use water and brainstormed for ways that they could change these processes to use less water without decreasing the quality of the final product.
The engineers at Baxter Jayuya then formulated a strategic plan to achieve their goals. The project they chose involved capturing and re-using discharge water from 16 sterilizers. Hot water generated during the steaming process and the water left in the sterilizer after product cooling are recovered in sumps and then transferred to four different systems: cooling towers, boiler de-aerator, the odor control Scrubber and to the Micro Lab vacuum pump. In doing this, Baxter managed to achieve their Performance Track goal and make production more efficient. Baxter reduced their total water usage by 21.7 percent in the first year of implementing changes. If you would like more information on this project, please contact Baxter Jayuya directly.
