Multi-Media Enforcement

In recent years, EPA has moved to integrate its enforcement of air, water and hazardous waste regulations. Prior to this change, these regulations were enforced separately. For example, when EPA air compliance inspectors visited a facility, they would not be accompanied by water compliance inspectors, nor would they be looking for potential water pollution violations.

With the new policy, EPA began to coordinate inspections, with inspectors from different programs forming multi-media teams that conduct air, water and hazardous waste inspections at one time. Since 1991, multi-media inspections have come to account for almost half of Region 2's inspections. In addition, all inspectors, even those conducting single-program inspections, carry the Region's Multi-Media Inspection Checklist, a screening tool to help identify potential violations in other media.
