Location New Jersey is bordered by New York to the north and by the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the south. The Atlantic Ocean also forms the eastern border of the state, and on the western side the borders are the Delaware Bay and Pennsylvania.

Topography The Atlantic Coastal Plain comprises 60% of the area of New Jersey, covering the south and center of the state with gently rolling hills. The easterly part of the state consists of pine forests and salt marshes which lead down to the Atlantic Ocean. In the center of the state lies the Piedmont, which is home to New Jersey's major industrial cities and major rivers: the Hudson River, Passaic River, Remapo River, and Raritan River. The more northwesterly parts of the state demonstrate a more mountainous character, with the Highlands beginning west of the Piedmont Region and the Appalachian Ridge passing through the far northwest.
