EPA added the Juncos Landfill site in Juncos, Puerto Rico to the Superfund National Priorities List on September 1, 1983 because hazardous chemicals were found in the soil and ground water.  The 11-acre Superfund site located in Juncos County contained a closed municipal landfill.  Thermometers containing mercury were dumped at the site.
EPA conducted site inspections and discovered liquid contaminated with the landfill pollutants flowing from the site.  The groundwater and soil are contaminated with heavy metals and a liquid chemical used mainly in medicine as a solvent.  Residential houses are adjacent to the landfill.

EPA identified six potentially responsible parties for the contamination.  In 1984, EPA requested one of the potentially responsible parties, Becton Dickinson, to take responsibility for immediate corrective actions.  Under an EPA agreement, all of the responsible parties conducted a study to determine the nature and extent of contamination at the site.  The study was divided into two areas, one addressing the soil contamination and the other addressing the ground water contamination.  EPA began acquiring and relocating properties that were near the site from late 1998 until mid 2003.  EPA issued an order to the potentially responsible parties to close the landfill by constructing a cap, installing a security fence and to begin to develop controls to protect the integrity of the cap.  These activities were completed in January 2007.  Under EPA’s oversight, the potentially responsible parties initiated a 30 year long monitoring program in 2000, to ensure that the ground water contamination and clean up is affective.  Under current conditions at this site, potential or actual human exposures are under control.
