The Shieldalloy Metallurgical Corp. site sits on 67.5 acres in the Borough of Newfield, Gloucester County, New Jersey and houses a specialty plant where chromium alloy and other products were formerly produced. Past disposal practices included the release of processed wastewater causing ground water contamination. The contamination was as a result of chromium contamination in an area dependent upon ground water for its drinking supply. There are slag piles and other wastes on-site including lowlevel radioactive wastes that are licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Both on and off-site ground water is contaminated with Volatile Organic Compounds and chromium. Soil is contaminated with heavy metals. There are private wells affected by chromium and are within a designated well restricted area and the residents within this area have all been connected to a public water supply.
EPA is addressing the site using three separate components called operable units (OUs). OU1 work includes a supplemental Remedial Investigation/Feasbility Study to address the delineation and cleanup of non-perchlorated ground water; OU2 work includes a supplemental Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study to address the completion of a full characterization of the nature and extent of the nonperchlorate contamination found in the soil, surface water and sediment at the site; and OU3 work includes a supplemental Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study to address the completion of a full characterization of the nature and extent of the perchlorate contamination found in any media at the site.
