Site Description
Cycle Chem is located at 217 South First Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Cycle Chem recovers spent solvents and treats both hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in containers and tanks. The site comprises two acres in an industrial area, surrounded by several other industrial sites. Cycle Chem purchased the property in 1985 from the Perk Chemicals Company. Cycle Chem accepts commercially generated, as well as, on-site generated hazardous waste for storage, treatment and transfer.
Potential Threats and Contaminants
The primary threat at the site is from volatile organic chemicals in groundwater, including benzene, trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene. There is soil and groundwater contamination as a result of activity in the storage tank area. Three above-ground tanks (which were used to store chlorinated solvents) were emptied of residual waste, then decontaminated and removed by the Perk Company. However, there is also groundwater contamination coming onto the site from a higher site, which suggests that it was caused not only from past operations, but also from some off-site source.
Cleanup Approach and Progress
The surface-soil contamination at the above-ground tank area was removed. A site-wide investigation is being conducted to determine the extent of the contamination and Cycle Chem's contribution to the groundwater contamination. This investigation has already identified the major areas of groundwater and soil contamination.
The investigation to characterize the site's hydrogeology and sources of groundwater contamination needs to be completed. Completion of the investigation will provide the data needed to determine the final remedy. A long-term groundwater monitoring system will be designed and implemented to determine if groundwater contamination is spreading. The land use and groundwater use at the site and surrounding area will be restricted where contamination exceeds residential standards.
