Site Description

Mannington Mills, Inc. manufactures vinyl based flooring for residential and commercial use. The facility is located on Mannington Mills Road in Salem, New Jersey and has been in operation since 1924. The historic and current manufacturing facility acreage is less than 200 acres. The current manufacturing facility contains the Mannington Resilient Floor facility and the corporate headquarters. Mannington Mills is located between urban areas to the southwest and agricultural areas to the north, east and south.

Potential Threats and Contaminants

Contamination at the site resulted from the operation of lagoons, former sediment placement area, inactive surface impoundment, and inactive industrial landfill. Soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater are contaminated with various organic and inorganic chemicals, including benzene, phenols, chlorobenzene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, mercury, arsenic and lead. Shallow ground water discharges to the adjacent surface water bodies, Fenwick Creek and Pledger Creek.

Cleanup Approach and Progress

The property is being cleaned up under the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Site Remediation Program through a voluntary cleanup agreement between NJDEP and Mannington. Interim response actions for limited releases have been undertaken, including soil removal and investigations. A vinyl sheet pile wall was installed along the southern boundary of the inactive industrial landfill.

A comprehensive cleanup program is underway. Areas addressed include removal of impacted soil and sludge from the active lagoons and former lagoon sediment placement areas; and capping, groundwater monitoring, and restrictions on land use at the inactive surface impoundment area.

An investigation and ecological evaluation of contaminants in creek sediments is underway, and a plan for remediation will be developed.  Groundwater monitoring and restrictions on groundwater use are in place at the inactive industrial landfill, and a plan will be developed for its final closure.
