Site Description
Veolia Environmental Services occupies approximately six acres on Eden Lane in Flanders, New Jersey. The facility is located in a light industrial area that is generally surrounded by wooded areas and farms. Veolia began operations in 1989 on land that was undeveloped prior to construction of a 37,000 square foot facility. The facility was previously operated by Advanced Environmental Technology Corporationon on an adjacent two and one half acre site on Goldmine Road. The closest residential area is located approximately one half mile to the east. Willis Brook, which leads to Musconetcong River, is located approximately 1,500 feet from the site.
Veolia Environmental Services operates a facility for the commercial storage and transfer of containerized solid and hazardous waste, under a Solid and Hazardous Waste Permit issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). All solid and hazardous wastes are received from off-site for storage prior to transfer to other off-site authorized facilities. All containers used for the storage of waste are placed in designated waste storage areas. All wastes received at the facility are shipped off-site in containers to authorized facilities.
Potential Threats and Contaminants
Releases of contaminants or potential threats have not been determined at this time.
Cleanup Approach and Progress
In accordance with the NJDEP underground storage tank regulations, two underground heating oil storage tanks were removed from areas outside of the Veolia Environmental Services building. Oil and oily debris were first removed from the tanks and shipped to authorized facilities. The tanks and piping were excavated, inspected, rendered inoperable, and transported for recycling. Soil samples were collected from the excavations and confirmed that no discharges had occurred. NJDEP issued a no further action determination for the tanks.
An assessment of the facility is planned to evaluate site conditions and identify any other areas of potential environmental concern. An investigation and cleanup of any contamination at the facility would be conducted, if necessary.
