2007 Region 3 Compliance and Enforcement Annual Results
FY2007 Annual Results Topics

EPA's Mid-Atlantic enforcement program achieved very good results to protect the region's air, water, and land in fiscal year 2007. Industries, government agencies and other regulated entities agreed to spend $402.8 million in pollution controls and environmental projects. "EPA believes in firm and fair enforcement, and our results bear that out,"said Granta Y. Nakayama, assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. "The EPA cop is on the beat."
"Communities in the mid-Atlantic states will benefit from substantial cuts in pollution and from improvements in the way pollution is managed by these companies and industrial facilities that are now complying with the law. The millions of dollars these companies will have to spend as a result of our environmental policing will also produce health benefits for the public."
State-by-State achievements in pollution controls and environmental projects include:
- Delaware
- $527,375
- District of Columbia
- $215,209
- Maryland
- $87,800,702
- Pennsylvania
- $25,182,550
- Virginia
- $141,329,815
- West Virginia
- $3,761,566
It is important to note that these enforcement results are of EPA activities and achievements, and not state activities or achievements.
Some EPA enforcement cases addressed violations at multiple facilities. In some instances, the facilities addressed were not all located in the same state. Where this is the case, the action and its results are counted in each state where a facility is located, which may lead to aggregate state counts and results that are higher than the total activity and results counts for the region.
