EPA CITES POCONOS GOLF COURSE FOR DESTROYING WETLANDS

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has cited Vacation Charters Ltd., the owner and operator of the "Westwoods at Split Rock" golf course in Kidder Township, Carbon County, Pa. for unlawfully filling in a protected wetlands.

The administrative complaint, filed September 30, 1997 alleges that the Poconos- area golf course filled in a three-quarter-acre wetland without the permit required under the Clean Water Act. EPA seeks a $25,000 penalty for this violation.

Under the Clean Water Act, an Army Corps of Engineers permit is required before dredged or fill material may be discharged into wetlands areas. The permit requirement is designed to minimized the destruction of protected wetlands.

"Wetlands are an essential part of the ecosystem," said EPA Regional Administrator W. Michael McCabe. "With each acre destroyed, we have lost a resource essential to our health and economic well-being."
