Asbestos
The U.S. EPA Region 4 conducts inspections throughout
the eight southeastern states to evaluate compliance with the Agency's
asbestos regulations. EPA regulates asbestos according to two environmental
laws, the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), which addresses
asbestos in schools, and the National Emission Standards for Hazardous
Air Pollutants (NESHAP), issued pursuant to the Clean Air Act. The Asbestos
Bulletin link will lead you to more information about Region 4's asbestos
enforcement program. To learn more about AHERA and NESHAP, click the links
below.
IMPORTANT NEWS INFORMATION – Effective March 1, 2009, EPA will assume the inspection and enforcement duties for asbestos NESHAP in the state of Georgia. There are substantial changes in how the program will be administered. Click on Georgia Asbestos NESHAP Program for more information.
Homeowners - Certain exemptions to federal regulations exist for homeowners. This does not mean that handling asbestos materials in your home without proper precautions is safe. Learning to identify and manage asbestos around your home can help protect you and your family. Follow this link for more information. [Asbestos in the Home]
Additionally, state regulations for removing and disposing of asbestos from homes can differ from the federal NESHAP. Follow the Regional and State Contacts link below to directly contact your state agency.
Abatement, Demolition, and/or Renovation – Building owners and abatement contractors may be subject to federal NESHAP regulations as well as state laws and regulations. Check the following links for information about how to comply.
