Award recognizes communities promoting active aging

Americans are living longer. According to the Centers for Disease Control the population of those ages 65 and older will more than double to 71 million by 2030. By staying active, youthful seniors can maintain a healthier lifestyle far into their golden years.

Regular physical activity helps to reduce the risks of developing diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Yet, one-third of adults older than 50 live sedentary lives. As a result, some communities are using Smart Growth to help identify ways to promote physical activity among older Americans.

Smart Growth seeks to create communities that are more livable, attractive and pedestrian friendly. By developing land sustainably, building a wide array of housing and providing different transportation options such as walking, bicycling and public transit, communities are better poised to meet the needs of an aging population.

EPA, as part of it’s Aging Initiative and in partnership with several other federal agencies, is seeking to recognize communities who are making strides in implementing Smart Growth and Active Aging strategies. The Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging Award Program is seeking applications until July 17, 2009. Eligible applicants include all levels of governments such as city planning departments, city councils, state legislatures and other public sector agencies.

Physical activity is one of the best ways to stay healthy and strong for people of all ages.
