Construction Activities Scheduled To Begin, Chemical Commodities, Inc. Superfund Site, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas
Construction activities related to the final cleanup and restoration of the Chemical Commodities, Inc., (CCI) Superfund site are scheduled to begin shortly. To help facilitate this activity, several homes adjacent to the CCI site will be demolished beginning February 2011.
Boeing approached several neighboring property owners to discuss purchasing their homes and they agreed. Over the last few months, EPA and the design team determined that removing several homes along the CCI fence line will make the cleanup easier to implement and better facilitate restoration of future green space.
There is not a health concern with these homes. Both EPA and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (federal health Agency) have concluded that the site does not pose an increased health risk to the community. These additional parcels have been incorporated into the overall project design, which was approved by EPA in November 2010.
BENEFIT OF REMOVING HOMES
Removing the homes along the fence line of CCI in advance of initiating the cleanup will benefit the project for several reasons:
- It will streamline the implementation of the cleanup plan and make it easier to move heavier equipment on site
- It will result in a much more efficient and practical work space on which to conduct the final cleanup measures
- It will improve the final appearance of the site
SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
The demolition will occur in three phases over the next few months: three homes will be removed in February 2011; one home will be removed in March or April 2011; and two homes will be removed in May 2011.
EPA encourages the community to continue to review the Administrative Record which contains information related to ongoing activities at the site. The Record is available at the following locations:
