Iowa State University The goal of this project is to increase and improve wetland protection, restoration, and implementation efforts by developing a tool to integrate wetland protection efforts into watershed plans designed to improve water quality. The objectives are to (1) improve the wetland hydrologic and water quality processes in a watershed scale model, (2) conduct scenarios to guide prioritized placement of new wetlands and prioritize restoration efforts on a watershed scale, and (3) disseminate results broadly. The final product will be an improved version of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) that better represents the functions of wetlands in a watershed. The revised version of SWAT will be fully integrated with the existing software and available to the public through the official SWAT website. $225,999
Iowa Department of Natural Resources Approximately 95% of nearly 4 million acres of wetlands located in Iowa’s portion of the Prairie Pothole Region are drained and farmed. The project will design and carry out a three year monitoring study of this wetland type that focuses on three components 1) wildlife value, 2) water quality, and 3) hydrological conditions. Five HUC-10 subwatersheds will be selected across this region of Iowa to collect information on those three components. $323,247
Board of Regents University of Nebraska Lincoln The overall goal of this project is to provide wetland managers with topographically-correct 3-D wetland maps to prioritize wetland conservation efforts and assess wetland conservation design practices. This project addresses three specific tasks for the playa wetlands: 1) establish accurate, topographically-correct, 3-D wetland maps to relate weather conditions and wetland functions; 2) develop a measurable Restorable Wetland Index to prioritize playa wetland and natural stream conservation; 3) assess wetland conservation design practices for watershed-based wetland conservation. This research will use high-resolution Light Detections And Ranging (LiDAR) data to create next-generation wetland maps for playa wetlands. The research provides the missing link in conservation design as these data will provide accurate elevation measures to delineate watershed extent and determine the impact of individual hydrologic modifications. The project will integrate LiDAR data and a hydrologic modifications datasets to find the relations of current weather conditions and wetland functions. $116,524
Kansas Water Office LiDAR (Light Detections And Ranging) data for the development of the Kansas Wetland Assessment Method being funded with EPA WPDG FY 2008 and 2009 grants. Will partner with sister agencies to acquire LiDAR in priority watersheds to complete the wetland assessment method development work and apply it in the Neosho River watershed above John Redmond Reservoir. By acquiring LiDAR in this watershed, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds previously secured by KWO will be further leveraged due to ability to strengthen the ARRA stream bank stabilization project in the watershed by identifying wetlands in the upstream watershed that will help to maintain the integrity and long term viability of the restoration project. $300,000
Curators of the University of Missouri - Columbia This project proposes a framework for better modeling of and reasoning about connectivity in aquatic resources and how changes in connectivity (including those changes brought upon by alteration in the landscape) may influence the vulnerability of wetlands, streams, and inhabitant species. Three types of connectivity are essential and will be considered in this framework: 1) biological connectivity - corresponding to species movement potential, 2) chemical connectivity the chemical relationship among water resources, and 3) hydrological connectivity - the hydrologic connection linking aquatic resources (Romero, 2010). $229,231

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission The study is designed to examine GHG emissions associated with playas and adjacent uplands across dominant land uses in the Nebraska western High Plains and RWB and therefore provide key information relative to effects of conservation practices and restoration on this service. GHG emissions will be assessed in playas and surrounding catchments in three dominant land use types in each region. The study directly addresses key core elements in Nebraska’s EPA approved WPP and will provide vital input to direct conservation efforts to maximize provisioning of all ecosystem services and focus restoration potential. $259,451
Iowa Department of Natural Resources This proposal seeks to build upon the wetland assessment methods developed so far in the form of a three year project to integrate and adapt our monitoring methods (biological, chemical, physical) for an important, largely unsampled category of wetlands found in Iowa; riverine wetlands. A second important component of the project is to develop a Wetland Project Plan (WPP) for Iowa. This component would continue to build the framework for a comprehensive wetland program in Iowa. $219,600
Kansas Water Office The two major activities are proposed: 1. Complete an EPA compliant Wetland Program Plan for Kansas. 2. Build upon an ongoing project concerning potential heritage streams and watersheds to conduct a paired watershed study to demonstrate the role of wetlands in watersheds with high quality samples, functional assessments, additional watersheds with potential wetland identified and incorporation of findings from heritage stream watersheds into a Kansas Water Plan policy paper. $225,422
Iowa State University of Science and Technology This 3 year project is designed to improve wetland restoration by strengthening and expanding upon agencies’ existing conservation outreach to women agricultural landowners (WALs) through the creation of a replicable program model, Navigating the Waters. Increased understanding of the generational, group, and individual identities of WALs will provide guidance for identifying processes and designing tools to better address their needs while motivating them to support and engage in wetland restoration. A concept map of barriers to WALs restoring wetlands, network analysis, and a WALs survey will provide data to guide the development and evaluation of strategies and tools to help WALs learn about wetland restoration. Listening Circles and Field Days facilitated through the Women, Food and Agriculture Network (WFAN) will offer a platform for WALs and agencies to interact and learn from each other. Through this model, both WALs and agency staff will build trust and develop partnerships that can increase their capacities to create, protect, and manage wetlands. This project will result in social, ecological, and physical improvements documented through social networks, biodiversity, and water quality measures. $234,423
Iowa Department of Natural Resources This proposal seeks funds to develop and test remote sensing technologies to characterize tile drainage and detect land cover changes for drained wetlands in northern Iowa. The first project component will focus on developing and demonstrating a large scale production methodology to map the location and characteristics of private tile lines. The second component will develop and test remote sensing/GIS procedures to detect disturbances of cropland due to water within identified drained wetland basins over a period of about 8 years using crop compliance imagery. Together, these two methodologies will form the basis of a business plan for mapping and characterizing drained wetlands to be implemented by natural resource management agencies and partners in Iowa. Once these two geospatial data sets are available and shared, natural resource management agencies and partners will be better able to assess drained wetlands, prioritize and plan restoration, and develop better management practices. $267,787
Mid-America Regional Council To develop and apply advanced green infrastructure planning tools within six priority corridors identified as critical elements of the Regional Sustainable Development Plan for the Kansas City Region. MARC proposes to enhance the Natural Resources Inventory through the valuation of ecosystem services associated with mapped land cover types; to apply this data to assess the green infrastructure conservation and restoration opportunities in six multi-jurisdictional transportation corridors; to develop a conceptual green infrastructure plan for one corridor sub-watershed; to assess local priority barriers to GI in one corridor; to assess equity dimensions of green infrastructure in one urban core corridor; and implement multi-faceted public and professional education on green infrastructure tools and strategies. $231,500

Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas The Kickapoo Tribe will develop a five-year wetland program plan with the main objective to protect the existing wetlands through monitoring, outreach, regulation, and setting up water quality standards. They will also prepare to monitor wetlands by preparing a quality assurance project plan, researching wetland monitoring methods, mapping wetland sites, and taking training. $103,515
Board of Regents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will prioritize watershed restoration/acquisition programs in the Rainwater Basin by examining playa wetlands’ sedimentation and water quality conditions using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation 2 and the fly ash technology. They will calculate and map the sedimentation rates and the age of deposition of all playa wetlands in the Rainwater Basin, evaluate water quality factors influencing playa wetland water quality, and assess the effects of sedimentation control practices. They will create a watershed index to prioritize future conservation programs. The final products of the project will directly address the critical research needs in the EPA approved Nebraska Wetland Program Plan. $100,000
Iowa State University The Iowa State University develop practical guidelines for establishing sedge meadows using seeds to improve success of mitigation and restoration projects. They will evaluate several common prairie restoration seeding methods to determine how they affect the development of sedge meadows. They will create recommendations, guide sheet, and a workshop to share their results and train others. $192,420
Kansas Water Office The Kansas Water Office will evaluate existing voluntary wetland restorations by federal, state, local, and private individuals to assess past restoration, operation and maintenance of voluntary restoration sites. They will use the results to create guidance for future voluntary restoration and will incorporate into their draft wetland program plan. $168,242
Iowa Department of Natural Resources The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will continue a 2011 study on drained, farmed wetlands. They will continue to evaluate wildlife value, water quality, and hydrological aspects. Due to dry weather conditions and the need for adequate data, the additional time will allow them to gather information on waterbird use, amphibian and reptile use, water quality of ponded water, and several hydrological aspects such as the timing and duration of ponding, infiltration rates, water flow patterns etc. Additionally and new, they will add modeling landscape level hydrological flow path and analyses. $190,879
Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation will develop a wetland program plan. They will also develop a strategy and assessment criteria to document wetland condition and prioritize wetland restoration efforts. Finally they will identify partnerships and resources for their wetland program. $130,859
University of Kansas The University of Kansas will create sampling methods for monitoring and assessing biotic condition of dry and wet playa wetlands. They will sample undisturbed and disturbed playa wetlands in Kansas and Nebraska. The sampling methods will be useful for assessment and conservation planning including assisting local decision makers in watershed planning and long term monitoring. $150,000
Mid-America Regional Council The Mid-America Regional Council will take existing wetland and natural resources data and incorporate into a GIS scenario planning tool called Envision Tomorrow Plus (ET+). ET+ scenarios take into consideration a comprehensive range of indicators from land use to fiscal impacts. This proposal will add wetlands and other natural resource features as indicators. The new ET+ ecosystems services module will be applied to six transportation corridor plans and 15 smart growth plans that are in planning stages in Kansas City. Eventually the model will be shared nationwide. This will allow planners, developers, and decision makers to weigh the economic, environmental, and social impacts of wetlands and other natural resource in sustainability. $97,700

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission plans to carry out these actions in their EPA-approved wetland program plan: 1) examine pollinators associated with wetlands (reference condition, cropland, and restored) in the Rainwater Basin, and 2) provide information about effects of conservation practices and restoration on pollination. $231,126
University of Nebraska-Lincoln The University of Nebraska-Lincoln plans to develop an interactive mobile platform that can transfer the existing Nebraska wetland information to mobile devices and accept real-time observations from the public. The project addresses an action in the state's EPA-approved wetland program plan. $100,000
Iowa State University The Iowa State University plans to develop a condition assessment protocol for permanently-flooded depressional wetlands in the Prairie Pothole region of Iowa. $196,769
