SPRINT WORLD HEADQUARTERS RECEIVES 2004 GREEN POWER AWARD

EPA Region 7 will recognize Sprint World Headquarters in Overland Park, Kan., for its commitment to preventing more than 3 million pounds of carbon dioxide pollution in the Kansas City area each year by using “green power.”

William Spratlin, Region 7's Air, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and Toxics Division director in Kansas City, Kan., will acknowledge Sprint’s commitment with a Green Power Partnership Award at its Earth Day event April 21.

“Sprint’s commitment to switch a portion of its electricity to green power is a meaningful and significant step to support the increased use of clean, non-polluting renewable energy,” Spratlin said.

Green power is electricity generated by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, water (hydro), geothermal, biomass (burning organic materials) and biogas (burning naturally-produced methane).

EPA encourages organizations to buy green power through a voluntary program, the Green Power Partnership, which is working to standardize green power purchasing as part of best-practice environmental management. Partners in the Green Power Partnership agree to switch to green power for a portion of their electricity needs in return for EPA technical assistance and public recognition.

Nationally, the Green Power Partnership includes more than 240 organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations, and universities that have made a combined commitment of more than 1 billion kilowatt hours of green power annually. The annual emissions associated with that much electricity generated by conventional means would include 1.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, roughly the annual emissions of about 120,000 cars.

Sprint has committed to 100 percent wind power for its newest campus building and has offered to match employee purchases of wind energy for their homes.

“Buying green power is an easy way to reduce the environmental impacts of doing business. We are pleased to work with leaders across America who are embracing green power. We want to commend Sprint for demonstrating leadership in environmental stewardship,” Spratlin said.
