EPA TO HOLD RADIATION EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISE IN FORT LEAVENWORTH
AREA
WHAT: The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) will conduct a radiation emergency training exercise (Ruby Slippers) in Leavenworth, Kan. No hazardous material will be used during this exercise. The presence of emergency response personnel, debris or unusual vehicles is part of the exercise and is not cause for alarm.
WHEN: The exercise will take place during the week of July 26 - 30, 2004. Residents in the surrounding areas might notice preparations, such as the presence of trucks, trailers, equipment and scrap material, in the days prior to the exercise.
WHERE: Fort Leavenworth, the Tonganoxie Quarry, and the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
PARTICIPANTS: About 130 EPA employees.
BACKGROUND: Emergency response exercises such as Ruby Slippers are essential to ensure that EPA can effectively carry out its long-established responsibilities as an integral partner in federal radiological emergency response. EPA acts in accordance with current federal emergency response plans, such as the National Response Plan, the National Oil and Hazardous Substance Pollution Contingency Plan, and the Federal Radiological Emergency Response Plan.
