EPA OFFICIAL TO SPEAK AT RADIATION EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXERCISE PRESS CONFERENCE

WHAT: A press conference to inform the news media of the L.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) radiation emergency training exercise, called "Ruby Slippers." The exercise is designed to test and evaluate the effectiveness of EPA's internal emergency response plans, procedures and response capabilities in the event of a radiological emergency of national significance. The press conference will cover the scenario and effects surrounding the Ruby Slippers training exercise.

PARTICIPANTS: The EPA's Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation, Jeffery R. Holmstead, will be the main speaker and will answer questions.

WHERE: Sherman Airfield Building Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

WHEN: 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 Press asked to arrive by 1:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: The goal of the Ruby Slippers exercise is to determine how to maximize EPA's efficiency and capabilities during a radiation emergency, minimizing environmental consequences and saving lives. Emergency response exercises such as Ruby Slippers are essential to ensure that EPA can effectively carry out its long-established responsibilities as an integral partner in federal radiological emergency response.

Credentialed reporters are invited to attend this event. Photo identification is required for access to Fort Leavenworth. Ask for Janet Wray upon arrival at the security gate. Cameras are welcome. Mobile laboratory equipment demonstrations will be available after the press conference for photo opportunities.
