FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EPA PLACES ANNAPOLIS LEAD MINE SITE ON THE NATIONAL PRIORITIES LIST

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed the Annapolis Lead Mine Site, Annapolis, Missouri on the National Priorities List. This list contains hazardous waste sites with the highest priority for cleanup in the nation. These sites, once listed, are eligible for long-term response action money as authorized by Congress under the Superfund program.

Congress established the Superfund program in 1980 in response to growing concerns over human health and the environmental risks posed by hazardous waste sites. Under Superfund, EPA investigates, evaluates, and cleans up hazardous waste sites. The EPA has been working at the site to stabilize the lead-contaminated tailings that were previously abandoned in the valley.

Construction activities under the removal program began in May 2004. The removal process will address the immediate concerns related to the site and reduce the threat to human health and the environment that is posed by the site.

Additional information about the Annapolis Lead Mine Site and the Superfund program is available at: http://www.epa.gov/superfund/sites/index.htm#desnqry
