EPA PROPOSES TO REMOVE THE MID-AMERICA TANNING COMPANY, SERGEANT BLUFF, IA SITE FROM THE SUPERFUND LIST

EPA announced today that it is proposing to delete the Mid-America Tanning Company Superfund site from the National Priorities List. The National Priorities List contains hazardous waste sites in the country. EPA is requesting comments on this deletion.

EPA and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources have determined that the remedial actions conducted at the site have resulted in the protection of human health and the environment. This means that no further cleanup is needed. However, this deletion does not preclude future actions under Superfund.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed decision to delete this site from the List. Documents about the site are available for public review at the Sergeant Bluff City Hall, 401 Fourth Street, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Public comments should be sent to:

Robert Stewart, EPA Region 7
Superfund Division
901 N. 5th Street
Kansas City, Kansas 66101
stewart.robert@epa.gov

Comments will be taken through August 26, 2004.

The Mid-America Tanning Company site, located south of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, covered approximately 100 acres and processed hides under several names between 1969 and 1989. In 1979, the Mid-America Tanning Company disposed of an estimated 1,300 cubic yards of tannery sludges containing chromium into two unlined trenches on the property.
