EPA PERFORMING MERCURY CLEANUP AT PRIVATE RESIDENCE IN CLINTON, IOWA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of cleaning up a mercury spill that occurred at a private residence in Clinton, Iowa. This spill is a portion of a bigger mercury spill that occurred at the Post Office at 300 S. First Street, Clinton, Iowa.

The bigger spill that occurred at the Post Office was contained and cleaned up on Sunday, July 25, 2004, by Post Office contractors. The mercury was contained in a package that was mailed to a residence in Clinton. The container leaked the contents, and mercury was found in several locations where the box had been in route to the final destination.

EPA personnel and contractors are currently cleaning the residence on North Bluff Drive. The cleanup of the home is expected to be completed within a week.
