CARDINALS PRESIDENT TO BE CLOSING SPEAKER TODAY AT NATIONAL
BROWNFIELDS 2004 CONFERENCE, PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS PROPOSED SUPERFUND
RULE
St. Louis Cardinals President Mark Lamping will be the closing
speaker this afternoon at the Brownfields 2004 Conference, and will talk
about how baseball and brownfields go together. Lamping will speak at
2:45 pm in Hall 4 of the America’s Center, 701 Convention Plaza,
St. Louis.
The Cardinals new $300-million stadium is being built on a brownfield
next to Busch Stadium, their present home, and is scheduled to open for
the 2006 season.
The Cardinals are also involved in a brownfield site in Springfield, Mo. They just bought a new Class AA minor league team that will move into Hammonds Field, a new ballpark in Jordan Valley Park. Jordan Valley won the 2002 Phoenix Award for a comprehensive brownfield redevelopment strategy for 250 acres along the Jordan Creek industrial corridor in the heart of Springfield.
Earlier on Wednesday, EPA will hold a public meeting from 1 to 3 pm in
Ballrooms 221 & 222 to discuss its proposed rule that would set federal
standards and practices for conducting all appropriate inquiries, as required
under specific sections of the Superfund law.
The proposed rule is meant to encourage the purchase, cleanup, reuse,
and economic revitalization of property that may be environmentally contaminated.
It would require potential owners to conduct certain inquiries into the
previous ownership, uses, and environmental conditions of the land prior
to purchase.
If the inquiries are performed properly and other reasonable steps undertaken, the purchasers can buy the land with assurance from EPA that they will not be subject to lawsuits under the Superfund hazardous waste cleanup law.
The purpose of the public meeting is to listen to the views of stakeholders and the general public on EPA’s proposed standards and practices for all appropriate inquiries. EPA officials will discuss the proposed rule during the meeting and accept public comment and input on it.
The Brownfields conference looks at ways to clean up and reuse environmentally contaminated or potentially contaminated properties. Additional information and press credentials will be available in the press room at the America’s Center.
