EPA CHIEF BRINGS $250,000 TO IOWA TO HELP CONTROL SCHOOL BUS EXHAUST
EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt presented a $250,000 grant this morning
to Iowa’s Bus Emission Education Project (BEEP). The money will
help pay for pollution control devices on older school buses in Iowa and
higher-blend soy diesel usage for bus fleets.
“Our overall goal is simple – to ensure that by the year 2010,
every school bus on the road in all 50 states is a clean school bus, emitting
less pollution and contributing to cleaner air,” Leavitt said in
presenting the grant to Dr. Troyce Fisher, executive director of the School
Administrators of Iowa, and other BEEP partners.
Leavitt said efforts to reduce diesel emissions mean “the black puff of smoke coming from diesel equipment will be gone forever.”
Transportation experts demonstrated the emission reduction technology during the 9 a.m. event at Roosevelt High School, using a school bus that runs on 100% soy diesel.
