EPA CHIEF PRESENTS $150,000 GRANT TO CLEAN SCHOOL BUS FOR KIDS
PROJECT
EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt presented a $150,000 grant today to Lincoln
Public Schools for its Clean School Bus for Kids project. The money will
help pay for retrofitting all its 106 school buses with approved pollution
control devices.
“Our overall goal is simple – to ensure that by the year 2010,
every school bus on the road in all 50 states is a clean school bus, emitting
less pollution and contributing to cleaner air,” Leavitt said in
presenting the check to Dennis Van Horn, associate superintendent for
business affairs, Lincoln Public Schools, which also hosted the event.
Leavitt, who was joined for the presentation by Gov. Mike Johanns and other dignitaries at Everett Elementary School, said efforts to reduce diesel emissions mean “the black puff of smoke coming from diesel equipment will be gone forever.”
More than 2,700 students had active asthma out of the nearly 32,000 students enrolled in the Lincoln Public Schools during the 2002-2003 school year. Students spend an average of one hour per day on school buses
