EPA Region 7 Hosts Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Informational Meeting in West Point, Nebraska
Representatives of EPA Region 7 hosted a public informational meeting recently for 126 livestock producers and state environmental officials about the Agency's inspection program for concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). CAFO inspections are part of an increased national emphasis on helping producers understand the requirements of the Clean Water Act. EPA held the meeting to discuss areas of concern in livestock operations and proactive steps producers can take to help minimize runoff from feedlots and assure compliance with federal laws. Pictured is Trevor Urban (right), senior CAFO inspector, who delivered remarks and responded to questions. Urban and other EPA staff answered nearly 40 questions on topics ranging from the use of aerial overflights for inspections to winter feeding areas to nutrient management plans. More information
Region 7 Administrator and Staff Participate in Agribusiness Association of Iowa Conference
EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks (on ladder) checks out crop spraying equipment at the Agribusiness Association of Iowa (AAI) Conference in February 2012, attended by more than 300. The sprayer is used to apply fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides to row crops such as corn. Also pictured are (left to right) AAI CEO Jeff Schnell and Hagie Manufacturing Distribution Development Manager Bill Reinsbach. AAI is the largest state agribusiness association in the nation, and represents more than 1,000 suppliers of crop protection chemicals, equipment, feed, fertilizer and seed; operators of grain elevators and anhydrous ammonia plants; and certified crop advisers. AAI keeps its members informed about regulations related to anhydrous ammonia, concentrated animal feeding operations, pesticides and renewable fuels.
