Transcript of John Askew's announcement of recognition of two Midwestern ethanol plants
I'm proud to announce that EPA is recognizing two ethanol plants in the Midwest for their outstanding efforts in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
EPA is recognizing POET Biorefining in Ashton, Iowa, and East Kansas Agri-Energy in Garnett, Kansas, at the 24th annual Fuel Ethanol Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
Their combined heat and power systems have reduced emissions by 33,000 tons per year, which is equivalent to taking 5,500 cars off the road. They have also reduced the energy to produce a gallon of ethanol by 20 percent.
Out of the 154 operating ethanol plants in this country, these two are some of the most energy efficient.
Both are making significant improvements that contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for their communities and the nation.
