Conservation: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

National Information

When air, water or land becomes polluted, it's often difficult and expensive -- and sometimes impossible -- to clean it up. Preventing pollution is cheaper than either waste management or cleanup. Preventing pollution offers greater protection of the environment. And it helps conserve our natural resources. Whether you're a major corporation or a concerned individual, EPA has information and programs to help you do your part.

These actions support EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), a national effort to:

  • increase the national municipal solid waste recycling rate
  • increase the beneficial use of industrial byproducts
  • reduce or eliminate priority and toxic chemicals, and
  • "green" electronics

Visit the RCC website for current goals in each of these four National Priority Areas.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Waste

Reduce

Pollution Prevention
Practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants.
Waste Wise Program
Targets the reduction of municipal solid waste.

Reuse

Buying Recycled
Purchasing products made with recovered materials.
EPA provided grant funding to support the Reuse Development Organization (ReDO) , which is a non-profit organization that promotes reuse as an environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economical means for managing surplus and discarded materials. ReDO also maintains a database of reuse organizations around the country.

Recycle

Basic Recycling Resources -
Information on recycling plus links to publications and Web sites providing in-depth material on specific recycling issues.
