Final Approval of California Ozone Plans
Note: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.
On September 26, 1996, EPA announced its final approval of California's state implementation plans (SIPs) for achieving national health standards for ozone pollution in six areas of the state: the South Coast (greater Los Angeles), Southeast Desert, San Diego, San Joaquin Valley, Ventura, and Sacramento. (At this time, EPA is not acting on the plan for Santa Barbara following ozone violations recorded this year.) The plans reviewed by EPA include both local measures and statewide programs.
EPA initially proposed approval of the plans on March
4, 1996, and published the text of the proposal on this Web
site. Public comment on the proposed action was taken
through May 2, 1996 -- 45 days after its March 18,
1996, publication in the Federal Register (61 FR 10920-10962).
The final action was published in the Federal Register
on January 8, 1997 (62 FR 1150), and the EPA approvals
became effective on February 7, 1997. A complete, browseable version of the final action
can be found below.
