The Census of Agriculture is the most thorough source of data on
the nation's agricultural production. It is the only source of uniform,
comprehensive data on production and operator characteristics for
each county and state. Congress requires USDA's National Agricultural
Statistics Service (NASS to take the Census of Agriculture every
five years covering the years ending in "2" and "7" (see below).

USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) publishes
U.S., state, and county agricultural statistics for many commodities.
Each year, NASS conducts hundreds of surveys and prepares reports
covering virtually every facet of U.S. agriculture. In addition,
NASS's 45 State Statistical Offices publish data about many of the
same topics for local audiences. The NASS mission is to serve the
basic data needs of people working in agriculture, and those living
in rural communities, by providing usable and accurate statistical
information, and services to support informed decision making.
Nitrate Working Group, California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), Nitrate and Agriculture in California, (February 1989)
In 1988, the Director CDFA appointed a twelve-member Nitrate Working
Group to investigate and report on nitrate in ground water. The
group consisted of individuals from agribusiness, state government,
and the University of California. The report provides practical
information that farming operations can use to reduce nitrate pollution
of ground water.
State Water Resources Control Board, Nitrate in Drinking Water: Report to Legislature (PDF) (October, 1988)
This report documents nitrate contamination's threat to California
drinking water sources (primarily ground water supplies). The sources
of nitrate problems identified here include fertilizer use, large
concentrations of confined animals, and individual septic systems.
State Water Resources Control Board California 305(b) Report on Water Quality 
Every two years the California State Water Resources Control Board
submits a report on the state's water quality to EPA pursuant to
Section 305(b) of the Clean Water Act. These reports serve as the
basis for the EPA's National Water Quality Inventories. The report
lists streams and ground water basins impaired by pollutants.
