In the Pacific Southwest for Fiscal Year 2005 EPA increased enforcement actions throughout the region, addressing a wide range of serious environmental problems – numerous air, water, hazardous waste, community right-to-know and pesticide violations.
In fiscal year 2005, EPA’s Pacific Southwest Regional Office took 479 civil enforcement actions. In addition to ordering nearly $3 billion injunctive relief to correct violations, restore the environment and prevent additional damage, EPA recovered $28.8 million in Superfund costs and collected nearly $6.5 million in penalties.
EPA inspections in the region, another priority, topped 800. The value of “Supplemental Environmental Projects,” which benefit communities, doubled from 2004 to 2005 with the value of these SEPs increasing from $1.5 to nearly $14.2 million.
EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) further enhanced enforcement efforts by combating environmental crimes, in cooperation with its federal, state and local partners. The criminal enforcement program investigated serious environmental crimes which led to successful prosecutions in California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands.
